Photonovels in Charleroi

Last year’s exhibition Roman-Photo, created for the MUCEM of Marseille, has travelled to Belgium. It successfully opened on Saturday May 25th 2019, at the Photography Museum of Charleroi, where it will be possible to visit it all summer long until September 22nd 2019.

Next to the beautiful pieces exhibited in Marseille, this exhibition presents an additional Belgian touch. Visitors will be able to enjoy a showcase of Hubert Serra’s photonovel “Les Eaux Malefiques” in Femmes d’Aujourd’hui 1982/1983, which was shot in Bruges. Belgian photographer Jean-Marc Bodson made a photo-reportage of the shooting of the photonovel and his original black and white photographs are exposed next to the colourful pages of “Les Eaux Malefiques”.

Moreover, thanks to the wonderful collaboration with the Museum’s director Xavier Canonne – to whom goes our biggest thank you – a separate space is dedicated to Belgian photonovels provided by us: few original Femmes d’Aujourd’hui are accompanied by a wall showcasing the digitized copies of photonovels found in Lectures d’Aujourd’hui, Mimosa, Chez Nous, Het Rijk der Vrouw, Joepie… An introductory panel helps visitors discover more about the fascinating world of Belgian photonovels. Maybe a sneak-peek for a future exhibition exclusively on Belgian Photonovel Culture?

To complement the museum’s visit, next to photonovels and the marvellous permanent photographic collection of the Museum, visitors can enjoy three other exhibitions that opened last Saturday: Pays de papier, curated by our KU Leuven colleagues David Martens and Anne Reverseau, takes visitors on a journey through travel books and portraits of countries; Bruno Vermeersch collection makes them fly to the Moon and back in time with Splendide Isolement; and young artist Laure Winants brings nature and science within the Museum’s walls in her photogravures.

If anyone needed inspiration for summer travels, Belgium and the Photography Museum of Charleroi cannot miss from their wish-list!
